In her solo programme, the extraordinary multi-instrumentalist Nora Thiele combines piano, percussion, acoustic instruments and electronics using a loop machine to create a unique one-woman ensemble. With a great love of experimentation and a joy in performing, she crafts multi-layered soundscapes. With a captivating stage presence, Nora Thiele takes the audience on an auditory journey into her very own improvised soundscape, spanning neoclassical, minimal music, global grooves and ambient sounds, captivating listeners with her virtuosity, sensitivity, intensity, uniqueness and freshness.
Rhythmic structures form the foundation for improvisations and compositions that draw on European and global traditions and are transformed into a new context. Meditative passages and rhythmic energy alternate, dissolving the sense of time. The result is an open, sonic language that transcends conventional genre boundaries.
In Beyond World Music, Nora Thiele combines frame drums from various cultures, piano, keyboard, electroacoustic sounds, live looping and vocals to create a unique feminine soundscape – inspiring, universal and captivating.

about my project
Rhythms from all over the world are abstracted and placed in new musical contexts. Ancient beats and global groove meet piano, keyboards and drum machine, becoming an expression of pure joy in rhythm.
My music, performed on my unique electro-acoustic setup (featuring piano, keyboard, percussion and drums) moves between classical, folk, minimal music and jazz. Archaic percussion instruments meet organic rhythmic structures; new improvisation meets centuries-old musical traditions. Through my years of engagement with the music of the world’s cultures, I continually ask myself what we can learn musically from other musical cultures, and how we can connect with them to create something unique, individual and globally unifying today. I have studied Arabic maqam music, South Indian Carnatic rhythms, and West African and South American rhythms in depth. I have also spent a great deal of time exploring European music from the Middle Ages and the early Baroque period, as well as Western classical music, and I incorporate these influences into my work.
This has given rise to a holistic form of music that places humanity and community at its heart. My music operates within the realm of trance and flow, inviting listeners to immerse themselves in the music through meditation and to enter a state of transcendence and fluid presence. It opens up spaces for connection, inner expansiveness and shared experience – carried by a vibrant rhythm.
Performance & Audience
The focus is on meditation through music, a conscious shared experience and genuine connection. Inner divisions between body and mind, head and heart, and between the individual and society can be healed. Music can dissolve rigidity, bring about transformation and open up spaces for connection, trust and vitality.
Many of my pieces are open-ended, improvised live and emerge in the moment – arising from the atmosphere of the space and the mood of the audience. In this way, every performance can become unique and open up a healing space of experience, in which connection, resonance, a journey through sound and inner movement are made possible.
A Feminine Musical Language
Even as a young woman, I consciously began to shed the masculine attitudes that are so pervasive in the music world and to distance myself from them.
This has given rise to a distinctive, feminine style characterised by virtuosity, subtlety and delicacy – yet at the same time powerful, present and imbued with great depth. My music combines gentleness with power and leaves room for resonance, connection, transformation and inner expansiveness.

Rhythm & Soundscapes
Rhythmic patterns from Oriental, Latin American, Indian, African, Brazilian and South American musical cultures are abstracted and transposed into a new, intercultural musical context. There are rhythms that keep cropping up. They are very similar. No matter which continent, no matter what time. The music has an energising and multi-layered effect, whilst also being meditative, and invites listeners on dynamic inner sound journeys.
My aim is to develop soundscapes for both the luminous and the painful moments in life, which arise from within myself. Some pieces grow directly out of improvisation, whilst others begin as musical sketches that become more condensed and profound over time.
Boundaries, Research & Origins
For over forty years, I have been exploring, travelling through eras, countries and diverse musical worlds, whilst at the same time immersing myself deeply in spiritual practice. All of this has led me, step by step, closer to a kind of primordial matrix of music: the living rhythm as the original, unifying and organising force.
Biographically, I come from a family of musicians and began my journey with classical piano. However, my intensive engagement with hand drums from a wide variety of cultures catapulted me into entirely different musical systems – in a sense, out of the Western cultural coordinate system – beyond the boundaries of conventional thinking.
In my setup, my two main instruments, the piano and percussion, meet like a pair of twins: different in nature, yet in constant interaction. Inspiring and challenging one another, they merge into a distinct, contemporary musical language.

The pieces come across as clearly prepared and focused, yet still retain a sense of openness and physicality. For me, the project is interesting precisely because it doesn’t rely on superficial effects, but builds a world of its own out of movement, repetition, space and sonic development. It was particularly evident to me during the recording that a very clear artistic profile is emerging here – one that’s conceived for live performance, but which can take on a depth of its own when released as an album.“
